Who Is Your Hero?

It is sad to meet many young Muslims who can count ten names of such celebrities on one foot but they don’t know the names of ten companions of our dear prophet Muhammad.

It is very normal to admire people who are the best at what they do.

We cheer for the best soccer player, the best singer, the best actor, the best chef et cetera. They are called stars and we celebrate their achievements

Yet, can we say that all achievements have equal value? Do they benefit humanity at the same rate?

We seem to cherish a new hit from a singer more than a discovery of a cure for a serious disease, while we know very well that the latter is much more important in the grand scheme of things.

Why is that?

We live in a celebrity culture where anything that entertains and can be sold is more valuable than real progress which can not be commodified.

Celebrities are our entertainers in arts, sports and tv business. We call them stars even though it is not clear what kind of light they shine.

Let’s think for a moment.

Which of the celebrities that are lauded by the media inspire us to be better people and live our lives to the fullest?

Many of these so called stars, not long after they are showered with awards at prestigious ceremonies, appear on the front pages of news outlets for scandals from cheating on their spouses to drug overdose.

What is the lesson to be drawn here? Money and fame do not buy happiness; neither do they guarantee integrity.

It is sad to meet many young Muslims who can count ten names of such celebrities on one foot but they don’t know the names of ten companions of our dear prophet Muhammad.

While the names of the companions are not mentioned in glamorous magazines, they are the true stars for the believers based on a saying of the prophet himself.

“My companions are like the stars in the sky. Whomever you follow, will guide you to the right path.”

If you read the lives of the companions they will inspire you to love God and His creation.

Shall we follow it?

They show us the true meaning of belief and the beauty of a life lived to the fullest of human potential.

Through their actions the true light of virtues such as generosity, bravery, altruism and truthfulness shines uninterruptedly.

Take Ali, for example. He accepted faith at an early even though his parents had shown reluctance to it. Ali, merely a teen, stood up to support the prophet in the midst of a crowd of Meccan leaders. He slept in the prophet’s bed while the house was surrounded by skilled assassins ready to pounce on him.

Ali stood by the prophet’s side till the very end. He was brave, strong, generous, fair, wise and humble.

He married Fatma, the beloved daughter of the prophet and they lived a simple life in material sense but a blessed life in spiritual aspect.

Today, Ali still stands as a witness to the beauty of faith. He is a hero who inspires many Muslims who wish to be truthful to faith like him.

The light of this star like many of the prophet’s companions crosses centuries and reaches us to this day.

The question is: Shall we follow it?
